Why Aktea?

The Hotel Aktea’s convenient location, right in the centre of Marina Lunga Bay, within easy reach of the main port and the town’s centre.

Until the nineteenth century, Marina Lunga was named Marina di Saint Nicolò, patron saint of sailors and fishermen, a Christianised version of the sea god Poseidon. In Greek mythology the primordial sea god was Nereus. His legacy continued through the Nereids, his daughters. His one hundred daughters, had names that recalled their roles in the court of Nereus or they we called after a favourite place or simply just after some peculiarity. One of these daughters was Aktea.

Aktea was the nymph of the seashore, the inhabitant of the coastline and Marina Lunga, in Lipari, a seashore par excellence! A sheltered bay with a black broad beach, right underneath the fortified rock upon which the ancient Greeks lived. Needless to say, that the name Aktea, is synonymous to this coastline as the sailors and fishermen of the island of Lipari adored her.

We believe the name Aktea bodes well to all the new “Ulysses” visiting the Aeolian Islands. It sparks cultural interest and implies an enjoyable journey outcome.
